Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa

Rotorua, New Zealand

In the captivating city of Rotorua, New Zealand, Wai Ariki is a visionary project that combines the breathtaking natural and cultural beauty of its surroundings with the transformative power of Myrtha Wellness products, offering guests an extraordinary experience known as Mōwai.

At Wai Ariki, the Twilight Bathing ritual beckons visitors to join as the sun descends. The Stargaze Pool, lovingly named Tirotiro Whetū, offers a perfect vantage point to gaze upon the starlit heavens while allowing your eyes to settle on the majestic Ngāti Whakaue mountain, Ngongotahā. This mountain holds deep cultural significance as a traditional star-gazing site for the Ngāti Whakaue people.

The essence of Wai Ariki lies in finding stillness and restoration with a profound connection to the Ngāti Whakaue culture and heritage that has shaped this region throughout time. The heart of tranquility at Wai Ariki resides within the Sanctuary, Āhuru Mōwai. This luxurious haven is designed to offer peace, serenity, and calm, providing visitors (manuhiri) with an opportunity to experience traditional Ngāti Whakaue therapies in spaces that reflect centuries-old legacies.

Mineral bathing in the Sanctuary, Āhuru Mōwai, presents a truly distinctive and restorative thermal experience. Here, guests can find solace and stillness in the mineral-rich therapeutic waters, sourced directly from the region’s springs. Nestled along the beautiful shores of Lake Rotorua and aptly named “Chiefly Waters,” Wai Ariki offers two architecturally stunning and culturally authentic areas for exploration, unwinding, rejuvenation, and relaxation.

As a project inspired, curated, and owned by the local iwi, Ngāti Whakaue, Wai Ariki is a sensory feast that draws upon Māori values, traditions, and culture. Opened in mid-2023, this 4,453 square meter spa and wellness centre embraces the te ao Māori worldview.

One of the key factors in the selection of Wai Ariki’s Myrtha Wellness products is their ability to withstand to earthquakes. The spa pools and wellness cabins feature modular stainless steel panels, forming the foundation of their structures. Myrtha Wellness provides an array of offerings, including mud baths, private pools, cold wading pools, hydrotherapy pools, heated lounge beds, along with a custom-made circular omoroa hammam with more than 25 meters of perimeter. You’ll also find a hay sauna, bio sauna, salt sauna, frigidarium, and a water paradise with four emotional showers.

You’ll also find a hay sauna, bio sauna, salt sauna, frigidarium, and a water paradise with four emotional showers.

The uniqueness of this centre is the Omoroa, a circular “stand-alone” hammam made with a Myrtha stainless steel structure with a diameter of 7.6 meters, covering 46 square meters, entirely pre-engineered and clad in black mosaic. The same structure used by Myrtha Pools for competition pools allows the design and installation of this hammam that complies with the rigorous seismic standards of New Zealand. This Maori culture steam bath, as indicated by the name, was one of the very first Myrtha projects in the wellness sector where the structural technology of pools was applied, marking the birth of the Myrtha Wellness brand with a line of plug-and-play wellness cabins in steel, customizable with different materials and finishes.

Myrtha’s role helps in defining the idea of this unique wellness centre, contributing to the creation of a new spa concept that includes a central thermal square overlooking a Finnish sauna in cedar wood, a herbal sauna, and a salt sauna both in hemlock. In this square, there’s also a Kneipp path to ensure thermal shock to the lower limbs after a sauna or steam bath. With the same goal, guests of the Rotorua Spa can choose other cold treatments such as a frigidarium with an ice fountain and other cold-water features.

The water paradise supplied by Myrtha features a succession of emotional experiences including a tropical shower, a cold mist, water columns and waterfalls, all enhanced by the benefits of chromotherapy and aromatherapy.

The Wai Ariki Centre also includes a relaxation area with heated mosaic-covered Myrtha loungers. Both inside and outside, a series of spa pools have been included, both hot and cold, and vitality pools equipped with hydro-massage jets, neck fountains, loungers, and geysers. For a lasting sensory experience, Myrtha has furnished a special indoor herbal pool that combines mineral water with the aromatherapy properties of native Oceanian plants.

Wai Ariki in Rotorua stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of natural wonders and innovative wellness solutions. It is an invitation to embark on a transformative journey that honours tradition, fosters connection, and nurtures the mind, body, and spirit while embracing the Myrtha revolution in the wellness industry.
